Joy Larsen, RMT, BCST
Joy's love of travel to developing countries was the catalyst for beginning her career in massage therapy. Working with street people in Kolkata, India Joy quickly learned that touch is the universal language and her experiences in India, Pakistan, Kenya and Uganda working with people living with leprosy and AIDS made a profound impact on her life. Returning to Vancouver, she enrolled in the 3000 hour massage therapy program at the West Coast College of Massage Therapy in New Westminster, BC, graduating in 2004.
For a number of years, Joy did contract work in Haida Gwaii where she set up a clinic in a remote fishing lodge. She also worked in a heli-ski lodge in northern BC during the winter months. Returning to Vancouver, Joy began practising at Serenity Therapeutic Massage in 2007.
Over the years Joy has continued her studies in anatomy as she attended at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon to complete an intensive gross anatomy dissection course taught by Gil Hedley, PhD. She has also continued post-graduate studies in craniosacral therapy at the Milne Institute in Berkely, California, and most recently graduated from a 2-year program in biodynamic craniosacral therapy with Body Intelligence Trainings. She has also taken courses in myofascial release techniques, muscle energy and deep tissue therapy.
She is committed to her profession and has experience in a broad range of pathologies, including shoulder problems, pregnancy massage, sciatic nerve issues, neck pain issues, headaches, and stress-related issues, using myfascial unwinding and release techniques, deep tissue, joint mobilizations, and biodynamic craniosacral therapies. She also has experience working with autistic children.
